"Fault Line" is Sophie Barbasch's work based on her own family relationships.

The fractures where the earth splits in an earthquake which are called fault lines is a fundamental metaphor for Barbasch. She associates fault lines with family relationships, conflicts, rebellions and all these bonds.

Barbasch tells in her project text: "Recently, people have told me that they think the images are tender. At first, this was disappointing, since I would like the photographs to express conflict. But I suppose it also makes sense. My family is sort of my lifeline - it sustains me."

Especially taking photos of her cousins to depict them, Barbasch shows the pictures she took to her subjects and examines their responses. She develops her project through these responses and she finds them to be cues for her to move forward.
